Apraxia of speech

Apraxia is a movement disorder, so therapy is focused on speech production through new motor plans. We use motor planning approaches based on the principles of motor learning, such as Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC).

Speech therapy can improve your child’s pronunciation by using repetitious and engaging practice to improve the sequencing and coordination of motor movements. This can improve their ability to more clearly express needs and wants while decreasing frustration when they communicate.

Tongue Thrust

A tongue thrust is when a child pushes their tongue against or between their teeth when they speak or swallow. When a child has a tongue thrust, their speech sounds might sounds different from other children their age because it can shift the tongue’s natural placement at rest.

Tongue thrust therapy focuses on changing tongue placement through daily exercises to improve the habit of pushing the tongue against (or between) the teeth during speech or swallowing.

Play Based Therapy

Play is how children learn and explore their world. We use play to model language skills and encourage children to use language in a natural and meaningful way.

We teach children to self-advocate, self-regulate, negotiate, and problem solve through play. These skills are critical for language development. We also use play to develop a foundational vocabulary naturally. Our goal is to make learning and communicating a fun and enjoyable experience.

Parent coaching

Parents know their children the best. We prioritize their concerns and goals to create an inclusive treatment plan that caters to their child’s interests and needs. Speech and language milestones are taught to help parents understand their child’s journey. We teach parents how to incorporate language enriching activities into daily routines and help them feel empowered as they focus on their child’s speech and language skills at home.
